From the folks behind French bars Ô Batignolles and Ô Comptoir comes social dining concept Merci Marcel. Located at the heart of hipster enclave Tiong Bahru, this breezy and chic French restaurant offers all-day dining options with a dinner ‘tapas’ menu that includes starters like Duck Rillettes ($18), where finely shredded duck is served with oozy camembert cheese and marinated pear. Sharing plates on offer include the fragrant and umami-rich Pork Tenderloin ($24), prepared with caramelised onions and ginger. If you’re a fan of seafood, pick up the Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops ($38) with caulifower crème & couscous, beurre noisette and truffle salsa. As a side, opt for the Ravioles de Royan ($18), a moreish dish of French dumplings filled with Swiss tête de Moine cheese – think of it as a French ravioli in a creamy sauce. Besides offering food, Merci Marcel also retails produce like cheese and charcuterie (available on their menu) sourced from artisan producers in Europe. Available for takeaway and dining are fruit juices and iced teas – the highlight of which are the UMÀ teas ($5.50 per bottle), a 100% natural tea that is currently all the rage in Paris (Merci Marcel is the exclusive distributor in Singapore). Sold in bottles, these teas come in flavours like the Rooibos, cannelle & rhubarb, and Basil & Yuzu. To top it all off, they even offer items from their own capsule collection: Merci Marcel tote bags, shirts, Breton bowls and enamel mugs.

If you’re a fan of Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR), you’re going to love this. Their new opening on Stanley Street, Common Man Stan, is an elegant, classy cafe with well-lit interiors and gleaming marble-topped surfaces, offering the perfect ambiance for a pick-me-up at any time of the day. The beans here are sustainably sourced and roasted fresh in Singapore, coming in options like Fast Brew ($6, their barista’s favourite single origin of the moment), Slow Brew (market price, your choice of single origin beans manually brewed), Nitro Cold Brew ($8) and more. Food-wise, Common Man Stan works with local farmers and suppliers for their produce – Citizen Farm, Kuhlbarra Fish and Nutri-nest Honey are just some of the local names they collaborate with. The all-day breakfast features interesting picks like a Potato & Leek Rosti ($22), with wild mushrooms, gruyere and chilli poached eggs on toast, while a Turkish Breakfast ($25) sees soft-boiled eggs, crispy feta, fresh vegetables and hummus on pita bread. For lunch, you’ll want to opt for the Cubanos Sandwich ($24) – slow cooked pork, gherkins, provolone and raising chutney served with fries, or the Ponzu Chicken with house-made basil pesto brown rice ($20) with brocollini, pickled beets and avocado.

Yes, we know, it’s another burger grill, but we promise you, this one’s different. For starters, HANS IM GLÜCK has a wide range of vegetarian and vegan burgers to cater to those with dietary restrictions. Co-founder and managing director Gunilla Hirschberger is a vegan herself, and understands the difficulty of finding quality vegan food when dining out. At HANS IM GLÜCK, the breads (sourdough and multi-grain) and sauces are all made in-house, and they even have a vegan mayo! Make sure to try the Juglans ($15) a vegan burger with a wheat patty, cranberries, sprouts, and walnuts; as well as the Abendrot, a vegetarian burger with an olive patty, parmesan cheese, grilled vegetable tartare, and rocket leaves. Banish any apprehensions you might have about the taste – the burgers here are juicy, fresh, and flavourful. For those who need their meat fix, pick up the Henne ($15), a chicken burger with creamy avocado, a tangy orange and mustard sauce, and sprouts; or the Klassik ($14) beef burger. If you’re looking for a meal accompaniment, pick up their inventive cocktails – our favourite is the Goldregen, made with vodka, elderflower, mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and lemon. They have an indoor and outdoor bar if you’re in the mood for a laid-back afternoon or evening over drinks as well.

Located within a beautiful shophouse in the heart of Tanjong Pagar, Casa Poncho is a Latin American diner sprawled over four sections: a courtyard, bar, restaurant and terrace. Designed to resemble a country home in Mexico, diners can enjoy their signature cocktails in the courtyard before they retreat into the main restaurant for comfort dishes like the Mexican Grilled Pork Skewers ($12) with roasted pineapple coulis. For those who are fans of seafood, there is a thick and juicy Grilled Spanish Octopus ($36, sharing plate) with ranchera salsa puree on offer, or if you’re in the mood for something lighter, a briny-fresh French Seabass Ceviche ($24) with creamy avocado. Casa Poncho’s apéritifs are made with mezcal, a distilled alcoholic beverage made with agave plants native to Mexico. Be sure to pick up the Mezcal Negroni, made with the mezcal espadin, sweet vermouth, campari and orange. The Poncho Club is also a drink not to be missed, with a slew of ingredients like the mezcal curpreata, ruby port, dry vermouth, blackberry syrup, lime juice, Bittermens’ hellfire habanero shrub (a spicy fruit and vinegar-based syrup) and egg whites. All cocktails at Casa Poncho are $16.

From the people behind Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House comes Blue Label Pizza & Wine. With a cosy, intimate space located on Ann Siang Hill, Blue Label’s menu features sharing plates and stone-fired pizzas. For those looking to indulge, you’ll want to pick up their juicy, briny-fresh oysters ($7 each) that come with a house-made cocktail sauce. Hearty fare here includes the moreish Blue Label State Fries ($25), made with hand-cut idaho potatoes, black pepper gravy, fried egg, aioli and shaved truffle. It’s also quality over quantity here with their pizzas. Long-ferment dough is used to make them, which means a great crust and a light, airy structure. Interesting picks include the Green Machine ($25) – a pizza with béchamel sauce and all-green toppings like kale, asparagus and pistachios. They also have a guest pizza ($32) made by chef Andy Walsh (of CURE and Butcher Boy fame), with toppings of Spanish patatas bravas, mild padrón peppers and premium jamón ibérico.

It’s a no-brainer, having seafood by the sea. The Privé Group’s latest offering, Bayswater Kitchen offers that, and so much more. Set at the picturesque Marina at Keppel Bay, the seafood-centric restaurant is helmed by chef Jack Allibone, whose experience includes being sous chef at the Michelin-starred Anglers in London. In line with the breezy sunlit space, Allibone serves up clean, fresh flavours in the form of signatures like Japanese mackerel tartare with oyster emulsion and sea herbs ($19); and char grilled octopus with smoked roe, gremolata and borlotti beans ($22). Seafood not your jam? They’ve also got carnivorous and vegetarian options such as char grilled grain-fed ribeye served with smoked, creamed potato, cauliflower, and hazelnut ($40). Come in a group and get the Fisherman’s Feast ($38 per person, min 2), where you’ll find hand-rolled linguine, lobster, prawn, mussel, and seasonal fish all cooked in a seafood and tomato stock. The beachside vibes continue with their cocktails, which come in vacation-themed flavours like the Strawberry Sunset, prepared with Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva rum, lime juice and strawberries.

This December, Resorts World Sentosa adds yet another starred-chef restaurant to their stable. Teppan by Chef Yonemura is the first overseas outpost for Kyoto-born Michelin-starred chef Masayasu Yonemura, who’s known for his innovative French-Japanese fare. And despite this being a teppan restaurant, the dishes here give you a peek into the culinary style he has honed for over 30 years. Teppan by Chef Yonemura currently only opens for dinner (6.00pm to 10.30pm for daily except Sundays and Mondays), offering a 5-course ($168) and 8-course ($198) kaiseki menu options; sake pairings are also available. All meals start off with a flaming cocktail to fire up the appetite. Dishes to look forward to on the menu include a rich Clam and Lobster Bouillabaisse as appetiser, and of course, the Japanese Wagyu Beef Fillet with Turnip, Zucchini and simmer deep-fried Shallot. Get treated to a theatrical fire-show as your A4 Miyazaki beef gets grilled on the teppan and then sprinkled with the flamed oil for a shot of smokiness. The beef is tasty on its own with a sprinkling of salt but do try it with the accompanying peanut butter garlic sauce, an original recipe created by Yonemura.
