Sure, you’ve had single malt whiskies, but have you tried one from a single grain yet? From the House of Suntory Whisky—who connoisseurs will most definitely know for producing Yamazaki, Hakushu and Hibiki whiskies—comes The Chita. This single grain whisky is made from corn grain and distilled using continuous column stills in the distillery in Chita Peninsula. Suntory has always been using grain whiskies as the base for their blends, employing them as a sort of supporting actor to heighten the personalities of the malt whiskies. After four decades of research and innovation, they’ve finally created a complex liquid gold where the single grain takes centre-stage.
The Chita Single Grain Whisky is a sophisticated blend of five different types of grain whiskies, each giving the final product a distinct flavour profile component. Through varying the column distillation process, the distillers at Chita are able to create three types of grain whiskies: clean, medium, and heavy. The clean whisky is pure and sweetish, the medium has a mild taste of grain, while the heavy one carries rich aroma of grains. By further ageing the grain whisky in both Spanish oak casks and wine casks, the distillers also achieved one fruity and complex whisky, and another that carries a strawberry aroma and smooth taste. By blending these five whiskies together, the resultant The Chita is a smooth, bright gold nectar that smells of honey and blossoming rose, with a refreshing citrusy and clean finish.

Make American Whiskeys Great Again
Asia’s best bar Manhattan at Regent Singapore is putting a spotlight on the great whiskeys from the United States of America with their newly launched American Whiskey Embassy programme. A specially curated list of over 150 bottles of whiskeys, including a range of rare and collectible items, are housed in the Whiskey Glasshouse, a cosy but elegant nook within the bar’s Ingredients Room. The whiskeys are categorised into collections such as The Big Boys, showcasing traditional American whiskeys; The Independents, featuring promising up-and-coming distilleries; The Experimental Collection, highlighting those using experimental techniques, unique mash bills and innovative finishes; and The Vintage Collection, spotlighting whiskeys bottles before the 2000s.
Though anyone can order up a shot of whiskey (prices range from $22 per 45ml pour of High West Campfire to $600 per shot of the vintage Old Oscar Pepper; half shots are available from some whiskeys, while a only-one-shot-per-customer’s-visit stipulation is implemented for certain rare whiskeys), only those who sign up for the Manhattan American Whiskey Club will be privy to special events, masterclasses and tasting sessions led by master distillers, brand ambassadors and industry experts. For more information on the programme or to sign up for the Manhattan American Whiskey Club, email [email protected].

Waxing Lyrical About Whisky
The only writing you’d probably be doing at The Writing Club would be penning love letters to the whisky distilleries, whose exquisite pours you’ll get to enjoy at this month-old whisky bar at Palais Renaissance. More than 500 labels are carried at this 700 sq ft establishment, majority of which comes from the personal collection of the couple who own the place. The number is set to grow very quickly, especially with resident whisky expert Fong Chan Teng in charge of the comprehensive drinks program.
A quick scan at the enticing rows of whiskies behind the bar will show familiar names such as Glenfarclas, Glendronach, Ardberg, Laphroaig, and Springbank. Upon detailed inspection, you’ll uncover gems from lesser known and obscure distilleries such as the Scottish Caperdonich and Littlemill. You might even be able to spot older bottlings of vintage whiskies like a 1970s bottling of The Glenlivet 12 Years Old and a 1990s bottling of Glenmorangie 18 years Old. Drams start from $16 per pour. What you should do though, is to experience a customisable whisky flight, either conducted blind or openly selected, from $68 per flight of three 20ml tasting portion.
