Layer On The Joy With Kueh Lapis

Kueh Lapis are popular cakes all year round especially during Chinese New Year. The Kueh Lapis is a rich buttery and sweet cake with many layers. Each layer is baked separately, making the cake flavourful and moist.

These thousand layer cakes are enjoyed by kids and adults too. However, how many of us actually know about the history of this luxurious pastry? This Lunar New Year, we trace back the roots of Kueh Lapis.

The history of Kueh Lapis originates back to it’s cousin, the baumkuchen, a round layered cake. This delicacy evolved during the colonial times in the Dutch East Indies when the Dutch introduced it to Indonesia. The pastry slowly developed into the modern rendition of Kueh Lapis after many improvisations. The recipe was further improvised by incorporating popular local flavours such as cinnamon, clove, mace and anise.

This cake is highly addictive and fattening which makes this a perfect snack for the festive season!  Sinpopo Brand offers this fragrant and delicate buttery layered cake - baked from scratch. Sinpopo Brand was started as an ode to Katong and its heritage.
