New Year, New Location For Majestic Restaurant

New Year, New Location For Majestic Restaurant

New Openings
It takes a truly exceptional establishment to stand the test of time - ten years to be exact, for Majestic Restaurant. The restaurant opened in the New Majestic Hotel back in 2006 and it has become something of an institution for modern Cantonese cuisine. "Majestic Restaurant was a success from the beginning. And it was perfect timing too. Back in the day, there were not that many contemporary Chinese dining concepts in the market," shares chef owner Yong Bing Ngen. But with the closure of New Majestic Hotel last year, the namesake restaurant had to find a new location. It wasn't long before they settled on Marina One, a mixed-use development- not only does it sit on an interchange with four train lines, it also houses some big-named companies like…

Set over three floors, this innovative new dining concept transcends cultural boundaries. The ever-changing menu brings European influence to the spheres of Japanese and Korean food, presenting dishes such as the Spanner Crab Linguine ($26) where perfectly al dente noodles are tossed with Australian spanner crab and slivers of Korean seaweed, and the Shima Aji Tartare ($36), where fresh striped horsemackerel from Japan is paired with grated salted egg yolk and a generous dollop of Oscietra caviar—which when layered, lends a disarming dose of umami to every mouthful. In the night, this venue transforms from being a CBD lunch hotspot…

Apparently, coldwater species such as salmon, halibut, trout, Atlantic cod have a much higher level of nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids. Coldwater…

French Chic At Le Méridien Seoul

French Chic At Le Méridien Seoul

[caption id="attachment_9440" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Le Méridien Seoul, Exterior[/caption] Amidst trendy cafes, upscale plastic surgery clinics, and skincare shops, is Le Méridien Seoul hotel—sophisticated, posh, and the new kid on the moneyed Gangnam block. Following a multi-million dollar transformation, the property took over the old Ritz Carlton Hotel and since it opened very recently on 1 September 2017, many a greying and confused local taxi drivers still refer to it as “Rit-zee Karlton”. Unlike Le Méridien hotels of the yesteryear where the design ethos was a bit confused, the new Le Méridien Seoul has smarten up its act by drawing from its Parisian brand DNA. As a result, the hotel is opulent with a hint of French sophistication and old world glamour. You don't just see it in the geometric grid patterns in the atrium…

Blackwattle: A Modern Australian Restaurant

Blackwattle: A Modern Australian Restaurant

New Openings, Restaurants
If there is a formula for "IT" restaurant then the new Blackwattle has nailed, well, it. It's headlined by Clayton Wells of the acclaimed Automata and one of the hottest chefs in Sydney right now. Opened since 12 October 2017, the 60-seater concept sits in a 2-storey shophouse along trendy Amoy Street. Interiors are informed by raw industrial aesthetic with a UFO-shaped lighting fixture and understated table settings. Peek into the open kitchen concept and you might spot the Big Green Egg (a kamado-style ceramic charcoal cooker popular among barbecue geeks). Every detail adds to its hip quotient. [caption id="attachment_8978" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Blackwattle main dining room[/caption] Backed by the success of Automata, one of the most talked-about contemporary restaurants in Sydney, Australia, Wells is bringing the same ethos to Singapore with…

[caption id="attachment_8754" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Restaurants Ards: Soy Bean Skewers with homemade tofu served on charcoal grill[/caption] We are in heaven. Or at least it feels like that, with cool wisps of osmanthus-scented smoke billowing over us from a steamer basket where plump, freshly shucked, Hokkaido oysters covered with osmanthus jelly and nitro-freezed cheese are perched. That’s just one of the modern creations at Restaurant ARDS that blew us away. The New Asian fine dining concept is an ambitious undertaking by two young, and relatively unknown chefs Ace Tan and David Lee. Tan was working in the advertising industry before training at fine dining establishments such as Pollen, Bacchanalia and Les Amis; while Lee graduated from the culinary school of Ming Dao University in Taiwan and staged at Attica Melbourne with…

This Is Wine RVLT Version 2.0

Boozy, New Openings, Restaurants
Hearts were broken when the hip Wine RVLT, or Wine Revolution shuttered its doors for the last time at Killiney Road earlier in June this year. "Where will I go on Fridays?!" said one fan in pure abject panic. [caption id="attachment_7984" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Wine RVLT bottles[/caption] Founded by Ian Lim and Alvin Gho back in September 2016 on Killiney Road, the wine bar revolutionised the scene with their not-at-all-stuffy approach: red plastic curtains reminiscent of NYC's meatpacking district, throwback 90s R&B soundtrack (think Snoop Dogg) and penchant for serving organic, biodynamic and natural wines in stemless glasses. There's no menu. Just shelves displaying bottles of vino that you've probably never even heard of: a bright Sicilian Susucaru so juicy and ripe my mouth starts watering just thinking about it; super…

Go Green with Tavelmout Raw Spirulina

Go Green with Tavelmout Raw Spirulina

#pickmeupmondays, Food
[caption id="attachment_7886" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Homemade green smoothie bowl with Tavelmout raw spirulina[/caption] My experience of spirulina has always been of the slightly funky green powdered variety. But Tavelmout's fresh, raw spirulina gives a whole new meaning to 'drinking your greens'. Each frozen packet has to be thawed under running water for a few minutes before it becomes a liquid that can be added to salad dressings, yoghurts, and cold-pressed juices. What's great is also that Tavelmout's raw spirulina has absolutely no smell, no taste, and can be mixed with literally anything. As most juice guzzling devotees and detox fans would know, spirulina is a blue green algae superfood that looks like, well,  pond scum. Looks aside, it's a powerhouse of more than 60 kinds of nutrients-namely antioxidants, proteins, folic acid,…

This month, the hotel relaunches their afternoon tea experience this month with refurbished interiors and a new menu. The new setting features luxurious colonial garden décor with tropical foliage, lush potted plants, ferns blooming on folding screens and plush green cushions - someone’s got a botanical obsession. But it's luxurious and sublime, an oasis we'll like to hang out in all day. What’s new is a dessert station where you’ll be able to see award winning pastry chef Alex Chong pulling sugar and crafting creations from scratch. On weekdays, the Three-Tier set ($48 with 2 cups of coffee/ tea) comes with classic butter and raisin…

[caption id="attachment_6655" align="aligncenter" width="810"] Restaurant Gaig's oven roasted suckling pig[/caption] The first thing I noticed about the table setting at Restaurant Gaig were the tweezers–the kind that fine dining chefs use to perfectly position the sorrel leaf exactly one millimeter away from the espuma of beetroot. But at this new restaurant (opened for barely six weeks), the tweezers are meant for diners to use like a pair of communal chopsticks for picking up food when sharing dishes. “It’s for hygiene,” explains Nuria Gibert, the restaurant manager and daughter of head chef Carles Gaig . Tweezers aside, this is not that kind of restaurant where you'll expect gels, spheres, and fussy foams. Instead, you'll feel right at home instantly in the family-run Catalan restaurant. In standard Mediterranean style, the setup boasts wicker chairs, no…
